Day in Koplenz

I took a train to a city named Koplenz. It lies halfway between Cologne and Frankfurt, allowing an equal distance of travel for myself and for my fellow co-op student from Cincinnati, Anthony, who is doing his internship in Mainz. We decided in the last minute to visit this city because it was some sort of national bank holiday and we didn't have to work that day. Anyway, the highlight was this really cool military fortress called "Ehrenbreitstein." It sits 118 meters above the Rhine on a treacherous hill, ideal for defense. It was built during the time of the Prussian Empire between 1817-1832. There was previously a complex dated back to 1129 but it was already destroyed by the French. The current fortress is one of the best preserved fortress complexes in Europe, and it has a great view of the city. Unfortunately the batteries died in my camera so I couldn't get any proof of this historical marvel, but Anthony will eventually send me his pics. Until then, you're just going to have to take my word that it was cool.
